DUSHANBE, 22.05.2025 (NIAT Khovar) – On May 21, Rustam Emomali, Speaker of the National Assembly of Tajikistan and Mayor of Dushanbe, met with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.

During the meeting, the two leaders discussed ongoing cooperation between Tajikistan and the United Nations.

Rustam Emomali reaffirmed Tajikistan’s strong commitment to deepening its collaboration with the UN, recognizing the organization as a key international partner.

The Speaker expressed satisfaction with the increasing engagement between the UN and national parliaments, highlighting the significant role played by Tajikistan’s legislative bodies—particularly the upper house—in advancing international commitments, the «National Development Strategy of Tajikistan until 2030,» and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The conversation focused on several key areas of cooperation, including water resource management, climate change and its global impact, disaster prevention, and glacier preservation. Both sides exchanged views on the upcoming International Conference on Glacier Preservation, scheduled to take place in Tajikistan from May 29 to 31.

The discussion also highlighted the UN’s crucial role in global security matters, particularly in addressing contemporary threats such as terrorism and extremism. Regarding the situation in Afghanistan, both parties reaffirmed Tajikistan’s unwavering support for peace, stability, and sustainable development in the neighboring country, as well as its backing of the international community and UN-led efforts.

Additionally, the meeting addressed the strengthening of friendly relations and good-neighborly ties between Tajikistan and Central Asian nations. The recent signing of a border agreement between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan was noted as a significant step toward enhancing peace, stability, and bilateral relations.
