DUSHANBE, 22.05.2025 (NIAT Khovar) – On May 21, Rustam Emomali, Speaker of the National Assembly (Upper House of Parliament) of Tajikistan and Mayor of Dushanbe, met with the President of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Mr. Philemon Yang.

During the meeting, the two leaders discussed a wide range of issues related to Tajikistan’s cooperation with the United Nations and its specialized agencies. Both sides acknowledged the UN General Assembly’s pivotal role as a key platform for advancing global initiatives and addressing the pressing challenges of the international community.

Rustam Emomali underscored Tajikistan’s commitment to achieving sustainable growth and enhancing public well-being under the leadership of President Emomali Rahmon, with the implementation of the National Development Strategy until 2030 serving as a cornerstone for the country’s long-term development.

The conversation also highlighted the crucial role of Tajikistan’s Parliament in advancing legal frameworks that align with the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Both parties emphasized the importance of continued and effective collaboration between the UN and national parliaments.

The discussion also focused on Tajikistan’s leadership in global water and climate issues, with recognition of the country’s significant contributions to shaping the international water and climate agenda.

Additionally, the two officials discussed Tajikistan’s preparations for the upcoming High-Level International Conference on Glaciers’ Preservation, set for May 29-31, 2025, in Dushanbe. This conference aligns with the UN’s declaration of 2025 as the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation, an initiative spearheaded by Tajikistan.

The meeting also touched on the current geopolitical challenges, including the rise of transnational crime and major security concerns, with a particular focus on the need for lasting peace, stable governance, and socio-economic development in Afghanistan.

Concluding the meeting, both sides expressed strong support for the UN General Assembly’s recognition of May 25 as World Football Day, a global initiative that aims to promote football and sports development worldwide.
