An international scientific and practical conference dedicated to new horizons in Tajik-Turkmen cooperation was held in Dushanbe, Khovar reported.

The conference provided a platform for expanding bilateral cooperation and strengthening interaction in the political, economic, scientific, educational, cultural and humanitarian spheres.

Participants discussed the contributions of Tajikistan and Turkmenistan to strengthening peace, stability and sustainable development in Central Asia, with particular attention to political dialogue, parliamentary diplomacy and the expansion of bilateral cooperation.

The conference was held in 2026, a year marking the 35th anniversary of state independence for both Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.

The anniversary provides an opportunity to reflect on the development of the two states over the past 35 years, including the strengthening of state institutions, socioeconomic development and foreign policy achievements, as well as their respective national priorities.

Over the years of independence, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan have developed their own approaches to national development, shaped by their histories, cultures, national characteristics and geopolitical circumstances.

At the same time, the two countries share principles of respect for sovereignty, good-neighborly relations, noninterference in internal affairs, and a commitment to peace and stability. Bilateral relations have developed from the establishment of diplomatic ties to a strategic partnership. The signing of the Strategic Partnership Agreement between Tajikistan and Turkmenistan in 2017 marked an important milestone in that process.

“At the same time, a strategic partnership is not merely a political formula or a collection of interstate documents,” said an adviser to the director of the Center for Strategic Studies.

Participants also discussed trade and economic cooperation, transportation links and regional connectivity. Particular attention was given to sustainable development as a foundation for economic growth and shared prosperity in Central Asia.
