Japan Will Provide Emergency Aid to Support Afghan Refugees in Tajikistan

DUSHANBE, 28.10.2021 (NIAT Khovar) – The Japanese government will provide $65 million as emergency grant aid to Afghanistan and neighboring countries, where the need for humanitarian aid for refugees is growing, reports the Japanese Embassy in Tajikistan.
“The Japanese government will continue to support the people of Afghanistan, as well as play an active role in ensuring stability in the region,” the statement said.
The Japanese government will provide humanitarian aid to Afghanistan and neighboring countries, including Pakistan, Iran, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan through seven international organizations in areas such as housing, health care, water supply, sanitation, food, agriculture, and education.
According to the Japanese Embassy in Dushanbe, assistance in the amount of $700,000 will be provided to Tajikistan through the UNHCR.
Most of the funds provided will be received by organizations in Afghanistan itself: the UN World Food Program (WFP) will receive $21.4 million, UNICEF — $15.7 million, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) — $12.9 million, UN Development Program — $3 million, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees — $2.7 million, International Organization for Migration (IOM) — $2 million, UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs — $300,000.
In Pakistan, UNHCR will receive $2.1 million and UNICEF $1.4 million. Another $2.6 million will receive UNHCR in Iran and $200,000 — UNICEF in Uzbekistan.
The international organizations warn that if the situation does not change, Afghanistan will face a large-scale famine.
