Glasgow Hosts High-Level Side Event Initiated by Tajikistan as Part of COP26

DUSHANBE, 04.11.2021 (NIAT Khovar) – Yesterday on the side-lines of the COP26 in Glasgow, а high-level side event entitled “Enhancing Capacity of Landlocked Developing Countries to Address Climate Change, Energy, and Water-Related Challenges During COVID-19 Era: Experiences and Solutions,” took place at the initiative and co-chairmanship of Tajikistan, the United Nations, and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
The event was attended by the UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries, and Small Island Developing States Courtenay Rattray, the Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs Liu Zhenmin, Zimbabwe’s Minister of Environment, Climate, Tourism and Hospitality Industry Mangaliso Ndlovu, and IRENA’s Director-General Francesco La Camera.
Tajikistan’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Muzaffar Huseynzoda spoke about the consequences of climate change, in particular the rapid melting of glaciers, lack of access to clean water, and the need for timely action by the world community.
He called on the international partners to take concerted action to mitigate the effects of climate change, conduct research and comprehensive assessment of the effects of climate change, and strengthen the capacity of vulnerable institutions.
Huseynzoda mentioned Tajikistan’s active role in promoting the World Water Agenda and international initiatives of Tajikistan in the field of water and glacier preservation, as well as the essence of the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development, 2018-2028.”
