In his statement, Hikmat expressed concern over the growing threat of international terrorism, extremism, illicit drug trafficking and different forms of transnational organized crime, especially emanating from Afghanistan, and highlighted the important role played by regional organizations, including the CSTO in strengthening UN’s efforts in countering contemporary challenges and threats.
Hikmat also noted that eliminating potential security threats requires cooperation between the UN and the CSTO. In this context, the development of mechanisms for cooperation between the CSTO and the UN in countering drug trafficking was considered important.
Considering the need to strengthen the Tajik-Afghan border, Hikmat referred to the proposal put forward by President Emomali Rahmon to create a security belt around Afghanistan, and called for the implementation of this initiative by the UN and other international organizations.
