Initiative of Tajikistan: UNESCO and WMO Launch the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation 2025

DUSHANBE, 23.01.2025 (NIAT Khovar) – On January 21, 2025, at the headquarters of the WMO in Geneva, Swiss Confederation, a solemn ceremony of launching the International Year of Glacier Conservation was held, where the Chairman of the Committee on Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan Bahodur Sheralizoda made a welcoming speech, reports Khovar citing Tajik Committee on Environmental Protection.
Within the framework of the event’s agenda, the prospects of 2025, declared the International Year of Glacier Preservation on the initiative of the Founder of Peace and National Unity, Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon, endorsed by the UN General Assembly, was discussed. At the event, they discussed the issues of holding a High-level international conference on glacier preservation in Dushanbe on May 29-31 this year.
Deputy Secretary General of the World Meteorological Organization Ms. Ko Barrett and Assistant Director-General of UNESCO for Natural Sciences Ms. Lidia Brito attended the event and made welcoming remarks.
During the event, stakeholders also discussed resources, tools, and approaches to address glacier melt, water management, water risk monitoring and other relevant issues, building on national and international commitments.
