DUSHANBE, 30.05.2025 (NIAT Khovar) – The inaugural Global Business Summit on Belt and Road Infrastructure Investment for Better Business, Better World, and Sustainable Development Goals opened Saturday in Jakarta, convening policymakers, business leaders, and UN officials to promote sustainable infrastructure investment aligned with the 2030 Agenda.
The high-level event is co-hosted by the Government of Indonesia, the United Nations Global Compact’s Sustainable Infrastructure for the Belt and Road Initiative to Accelerate the SDGs Action Platform, the THK Forum, United in Diversity Foundation, KADIN (Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry), ICC, IGCN, and the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN).
UN Under-Secretary-General Li Junhua, in his opening remarks, stressed the importance of building “low-carbon, resilient, and universally accessible infrastructure,” calling it essential to achieving the SDGs. UN Global Compact Executive Director Sanda Ojiambo identified four business imperatives: adopting science-based decarbonization targets, advancing circular economy models, community engagement, and mobilizing blended finance.
The summit featured a wide array of outcomes, including the release of the “Transition Finance for Sustainable Development of Traditional Industries” report, and nine cross-sectoral initiatives focused on green energy, SMEs, and global health. A Joint Statement by the High-Level Steering Committee of the UNGC BRI for SDG Action Platform reaffirmed the Belt and Road Initiative as a “global public good,” emphasizing responsible investment and private sector partnerships in sectors ranging from digital infrastructure to healthcare and agriculture.
Four expert roundtables explored critical sustainability themes: responsible mineral supply chains, healthcare innovation, ESG standards, and green industrial zones. The summit also marked the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Indonesia, with the launch of the Sino-Indonesia Corporate Communities Action Network, aimed at advancing sustainable community development.
Xiamen Airlines Chairman Zhao Dong underscored the aviation sector’s role in promoting the «Air Silk Road» and strengthening regional connectivity.
Participants agreed on the need to establish an annual BRI business summit mechanism, ensuring future projects align with SDG principles and incorporate international best practices in private sector governance.
The summit concluded with a unified call to action for inclusive, climate-resilient infrastructure through public-private collaboration under the Belt and Road framework. Organizers hailed the event as a milestone in shaping a new global model for infrastructure investment in the era of sustainable development.
