DUSHANBE, 01.07.2026 (NIAT Khovar) – Over the past decade, the Republic of Tajikistan has become one of the key partners of the Green Climate Fund (GCF), with its leadership in advancing the global climate agenda gaining increasing international recognition. This was stated by Executive Director of the Green Climate Fund Mafalda Duarte during a press briefing following her meeting with the President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon.

According to Mafalda Duarte, the Green Climate Fund is the world’s largest multilateral climate fund, supporting 134 developing countries in climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts. Over the past decade, the Fund has invested more than US$20 billion, mobilizing an additional US$80 billion in co-financing.

The Executive Director noted that this year marks 10 years of partnership between the Green Climate Fund and Tajikistan. The Fund approved its first project for the country in 2016. Since then, it has committed US$175 million of its own resources to Tajikistan, leveraging an additional US$600 million for nine projects in the areas of energy, agriculture, early warning systems and other climate resilience initiatives.

She also announced that the 45th meeting of the GCF Board, currently taking place in Dushanbe, is considering two additional projects for Tajikistan worth more than US$60 million. With co-financing from development partners, the total investment is expected to reach approximately US$130 million.

Mafalda Duarte highly praised the Fund’s cooperation with the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, emphasizing that joint efforts have strengthened the country’s institutional capacity. She recalled that two years ago, the first national institution of Tajikistan received GCF accreditation, creating new opportunities for nationally led climate projects.

The Executive Director also highlighted Tajikistan’s important regional role, noting that the country’s vast hydropower resources, glaciers and active international engagement make it a key player in strengthening climate resilience across Central Asia.

As an example, she referred to the regional «Glaciers to Farms» programme, which covers Tajikistan and eight other countries. Under the initiative, the Green Climate Fund is investing US$250 million, expected to mobilize an additional US$3.2 billion for climate action across the region.

«Holding the Green Climate Fund Board meeting in Dushanbe is another clear demonstration of Tajikistan’s leadership in advancing the global climate agenda. Representatives from around the world have the opportunity to witness not only the country’s renowned hospitality but also its leading role in addressing climate change,» Mafalda Duarte said.

She added that her meeting with President Emomali Rahmon once again demonstrated his profound understanding of today’s global challenges and the importance of strengthening international cooperation in responding to climate change.

«Today, more than ever, the world needs this kind of leadership and vision to jointly address climate challenges, support the most vulnerable communities, and achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement,» the Executive Director of the Green Climate Fund stated.
