DUSHANBE, 01.04.2021 (NIAT Khovar) – The United Nations General Assembly (UN GA) adopted the resolution Cooperation Between the United Nations and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) developed by Tajikistan.

The document which is published on the website of Tajikistan’s presidency in the SCO, states that Resolution No. 75/69 was adopted on March 25, at the 75th session of the UN General Assembly during its 58th plenary session.

The draft document was developed by Tajikistan, which presides the SCO in 2020-2021. All the SCO member states, as well as Azerbaijan, Belarus, Cambodia, Kiribati and Costa Rica were among the co-sponsors of the resolution.

In the text of the document, the UN GA notes its appreciation of the activities of the SCO in the field of strengthening peace and security.

In particular, it notes that the SCO has become the most important regional organization dealing with security issues in the region in all its aspects, including in cooperation with other international structures.

Special attention is paid to the desire of the SCO member states to make efforts to achieve the goals outlined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The resolution stresses the commitment of the SCO member states to ensure the peaceful settlement of regional disputes.

A positive assessment was given to the efforts of the SCO member states aimed at transforming the SCO space into a region of lasting peace, friendship, prosperity and harmony.

The UN GA mentions that in the resolution 71/14 it took note of the desire of the SCO member states to promote stability and the maintenance of international peace and security. The document also praises the efforts of the SCO member states to strengthen cooperation in the fight against terrorism.

The well-established constructive cooperation between the SCO RATS and the UN Counter-Terrorism Office, including with the UN Counter-Terrorism Center in order to implement the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy, was also emphasized.

The dynamic cooperation between the SCO RATS and the Executive Directorate of the Counter-Terrorism Committee is underlined in the framework of the current memorandum of understanding on cooperation between these two structures, signed in 2019.

The SCO Secretariat is also encouraged to sign memorandums of understanding with ESCAP and UNESCO. The efforts of the Organization to develop cooperation with other regional organizations, including the CSTO, CIS, ASEAN, CICA and ECO, as well as with the ICRC, were noted.

The conviction was expressed that the strengthening of cooperation between the SCO and the UN and its structures will continue to contribute to the implementation of the UN goals and objectives.

While considering the above, the GA invites the UN Secretary General to continue holding regular consultations with the SCO Secretary General, using the existing inter-agency forums and formats, including the annual high-level interactive dialogue between the UN Secretary General and the heads of regional and other organizations.

The specialized agencies, organizations, programs and funds of the UN system are encouraged to cooperate with the SCO for the joint implementation of programs aimed at achieving their goals.
