A new book highlighting the history and cultural heritage of Ancient Khuttal has been published in Tajikistan to mark the 35th anniversary of the country’s independence, according to the Agency for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Heritage under the Government of Tajikistan.

Titled “Ancient Khuttal,” the publication was prepared at the initiative of the agency and is based on archaeological research related to the ancient city of Khulbuk, the capital of Ancient Khuttal, as well as surrounding settlements. The book is intended for historians, researchers and readers interested in the history of one of Central Asia’s most significant historical regions.

According to the agency, the research presented in the book demonstrates the important role Ancient Khuttal played in the development of civilizational processes in Central Asia and in shaping the national identity of the Tajik people.

The publication also highlights a group of historical monuments that formed the basis of the “Khulbuk – Capital of Ancient Khuttal” nomination submitted to UNESCO by the authors of the book.

Researchers note that the Khuttal region contains a rich concentration of archaeological, architectural and natural heritage sites spanning from the Stone Age to the period of the Samanid Empire. These monuments provide insight into the emergence and development of urban life, settlement patterns and infrastructure in the region.

Tajikistan is home to numerous historical and cultural landmarks, many of which are considered unique in terms of their historical significance and attract visitors from around the world.

Among them are the monuments of Ancient Khuttal, which were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2025. The UNESCO nomination includes 11 archaeological and architectural sites located in Khatlon Region, including the Buddhist monastery of Ajina-Teppa, the Khulbuk Fortress, the ancient city of Khulbuk, Manzarateppa, Zoli Zard Fortress, the Mausoleum of Mavlono Tochiddin, Halevard (Kofir Kala), the city of Zoli Zar, the Tohira Caravanserai, Shahr-Teppa and the Buddhist monastery of Khisht-Teppa.
