United Nations-mandated University for Peace Recognizes Emomali Rahmon’s Сontribution to Peacebuilding, Sustainable Development and Regional Cooperation

DUSHANBE, 25.05.2026 (NIAT Khovar) – President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon has been awarded the Recognition Certificate of the United Nations-mandated University for Peace for his outstanding contribution to climate action, sustainable development and regional cooperation. This was stated by Permanent Representative of the University, Ambassador David Fernandez Puyana following the award ceremon.

It was noted that the University for Peace is a specialized institution within the United Nations system, established by a UN General Assembly resolution in 1980 to promote peace, understanding, tolerance and peaceful coexistence through education, training and research.

David Fernandez Puyana emphasized that the decision to present the Recognition Certificate to the President of Tajikistan was made in appreciation of his initiatives in the fields of peacebuilding, sustainable development and international cooperation. It was also stressed that this is the first award of its kind presented to a head of state from Central Asia.

Special attention during the ceremony was paid to the Treaty on the Junction Point of the State Borders and the Khujand Declaration on Eternal Friendship signed on March 31, 2025 between Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.

According to the representative of the University for Peace, these documents serve as a global example of commitment to sovereignty, territorial integrity and the peaceful settlement of issues in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations.

The international initiative of Tajikistan on glacier preservation was also highlighted as an important environmental and water-related effort aimed at raising global awareness about glacier melting, freshwater resources, ecosystem protection and climate resilience.

In addition, the international community highly appreciated the initiatives of President Emomali Rahmon within the framework of the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development”, as well as the proposal to advance a UN resolution on the “Decade for Strengthening Peace for Future Generations”.

It was noted that the initiative is aimed at strengthening international cooperation, preventing conflicts and promoting lasting peace through political and diplomatic means.
