DUSHANBE, July 16, 2026 (NIAT Khovar) — Hot weather with temperatures ranging from 41°C to 46°C is expected across Tajikistan from July 16 to 19, according to the country’s Hydrometeorology Agency.
During this period, temperatures in lowland areas are forecast to reach 41°C to 46°C, while mountainous and foothill regions are expected to experience temperatures of 34°C to 39°C. In the Darvoz district of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region, temperatures may rise to 39°C to 41°C.
The hot weather may also increase the risk of glacial mudflows in foothill and mountainous areas of districts under central government jurisdiction, Sughd region and western parts of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region. Rising water levels are also expected in the Panj, Zarafshan and Vakhsh river basins.
Authorities advised residents to limit outdoor activities between 11:00 and 16:00, drink sufficient water, consume liquid foods, fruit drinks and juices, and avoid sugary and alcoholic beverages.
Medical specialists recommend wearing light clothing made from natural fabrics and taking additional care of children, particularly during illnesses involving diarrhea or acute respiratory infections, as dehydration risks increase during hot weather.
Experts note that in recent years, climate change has contributed to more frequent extreme heat events, posing serious risks to vulnerable groups, including elderly people, pregnant women and those with chronic illnesses. Residents are advised to avoid direct exposure to sunlight, stay in cool indoor spaces when possible and seek medical assistance if symptoms such as dizziness, weakness, excessive thirst or headaches occur.
