Deputy Minister of Energy and Water Resources of Tajikistan Sharif Mahmadzoda took part in the Ministerial Dialogue on Promoting the Energy Transition Based on Renewable Energy Sources in Central Asia during the Baku Energy Forum.
Speaking at the plenary session, Mahmadzoda said the transition toward renewable energy is essential for strengthening industry, improving living standards and ensuring long-term sustainability.
“For Tajikistan, the energy transition is not only part of the global climate agenda but also a key condition for national development, energy security, industrial growth and improving living standards,” he said.
According to the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources, Tajikistan ranks among the world’s leading producers of green electricity, with nearly 95% of the country’s power generated by hydropower plants.
Officials say, however, that the country is increasingly facing climate-related challenges. Melting glaciers, seasonal fluctuations in river flows and rapidly growing electricity demand are forcing authorities to reconsider the country’s future energy mix.
Mahmadzoda emphasized that Tajikistan is focusing on diversifying its renewable energy portfolio by expanding solar and wind power projects while modernizing aging infrastructure.
Regional cooperation was also highlighted during the discussion. Tajikistan’s renewed participation in the Unified Energy System of Central Asia and progress on the CASA-1000 electricity transmission project were described as strategic steps toward creating a regional clean energy market linking Central and South Asia.
