Tajikistan has launched a digital initiative to preserve and showcase its historical and cultural monuments as part of a broader national push to develop its digital economy and innovation sector.
A conference held at the Agency for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Heritage focused on efforts to digitize the country’s cultural assets, according to NIAT “Khovar.”
The initiative is being implemented under a presidential decree declaring 2025–2030 the “Years of Development of the Digital Economy and Innovation.”
Officials said a dedicated digital platform has been created on the agency’s website, featuring seven sections covering tangible and intangible heritage, archaeological finds, legal documents, cultural categories and a digital library. They said it is the first national online register of historical and cultural monuments in Tajikistan.
Agency Director Sherali Khojazoda said the project is aimed at preserving national heritage and ensuring access for future generations. He said the use of artificial intelligence technologies will help improve monitoring, documentation and restoration of monuments.
The first phase includes digitizing key national heritage sites, including ancient Sarazm, the Kholbuk Fortress, the Mausoleum of Mir Sayid Ali Hamadani and monuments of ancient Khuttal, which were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in December 2025.
Officials said the project will eventually create a unified national database accessible to researchers, students and the public through an online portal.
The initiative comes as Tajikistan aligns its cultural preservation efforts with broader digital transformation goals, which officials say are critical for protecting heritage from environmental risks and ensuring global accessibility.
