On the evening of June 25, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution entitled “International Decade of Strengthening of Peace for Future Generations”, an initiative introduced by the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Leader of the Nation, Honorable Emomali Rahmon. Through this action, Member States reaffirmed their collective commitment to advancing peace, dialogue, and intergenerational solidarity as essential foundations for safeguarding the well being of future generations.
The resolution recalls the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations, including the determination “to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war” and the commitment to settle disputes by peaceful means. It further recognizes the importance of the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace as the universal mandate for promoting a culture of peace and non violence.
By the terms of the resolution, the General Assembly proclaims the period 2027–2036 as the International Decade of Strengthening of Peace for Future Generations. The Decade aims to promote peace, encourage dialogue and reconciliation, and support intergenerational engagement — including among children, youth, and older persons — to ensure that the needs and interests of future generations are reflected in policy and decision making processes.
The resolution welcomes the contributions of Member States, leaders and communities that have advanced peace, reconciliation, and national unity through inclusive political processes, confidence building, post conflict recovery, and long term investments in social cohesion. These national experiences, it notes, constitute valuable sources of inspiration for present and future generations.
The resolution further welcomes the commitments made at the 2024 Summit of the Future and the adoption of “The Pact for the Future”, in which Member States pledged to strengthen cooperation to protect the interests of future generations. It also highlights the positive developments in Central Asia, welcoming the efforts of Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan in resolving border issues through peaceful means and the signing of relevant agreements.
The document requests the Secretary General, specialized agencies, regional commissions, and other UN entities to facilitate the implementation of the Decade in cooperation with Governments and relevant stakeholders. Member States, civil society organizations, and other partners are invited to support the Decade’s implementation and to share best practices and knowledge.
It should be underscored that the adoption of this resolution—introduced in the General Assembly at the initiative of our Head of State—comes at a moment when millions of civilians in various regions of the world continue to face security threats and armed conflict. This development reflects the peace building and unifying role of the Tajik nation and will further contribute to advancing the global agenda on the culture of peace.
Moreover, this initiative—advanced by a statesman such as Emomali Rahmon, the leader of a nation that, having endured the horrors of an imposed civil war, deeply cherishes peace and tranquility, political stability, and national unity, and will never forget the bitter lessons of that national tragedy—is both timely and indispensable.
