Antonio Guterres, UN Secretary-General highly assessed the global initiatives of Tajikistan on water and environmental issues
DUSHANBE, 12.06.2017. /NIAT “Khovar”/. “One of the SDGs is the water and environment issues at the regional and international level, in solution of which the initiatives of Tajikistan and President Emomali Rahmon are very important and timely”, — said Antonio Guterres, UN Secretary-General following the meeting with the Founder of Peace and National Unity – Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan H.E. Emomali Rahmon on June 11 here in Dushanbe.
According to the UN Secretary-General, in this direction Tajikistan has shown very good initiative and brought together the international community to address these issues.
“The Republic of Tajikistan is one of the countries, which sees a lot of negative impact from the climate change effects. Therefore, we agreed that the international community should take a lot of efforts to improve the fight against climate change”, — expressed Antonio Guterres.
UN Secretary-General noted that at the meeting with the Leader of the Nation the attention was paid to the issues of strengthening cooperation between the United Nations and the Central Asian countries in various fields, the fight against terrorism, extremism, drug trafficking and situation in the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.
During the meeting the parties have also discussed the issue of the UN Human Rights Council. In this direction, Antonio Guterres said that they are ready to assist Tajikistan in the implementation of recommendations of the Council.
“The National Development Strategy for the period up to 2030, which has been developed and adopted in collaboration with the United Nations Development Program, fully meets the SDGs and the UN representatives will promote its implementation in the Republic of Tajikistan”, — said the UN Secretary-General.
According to the UN News Centre, Antonio Guterres, UN Secretary-General visits the Central Asian countries – Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan. Antonio Guterres said that the aim of his visit to Central Asian countries is to improve cooperation between UN and region’s countries, in particular he has pointed out that: “We intend to put our cooperation with the countries of the region, including with the Republic of Tajikistan, at the highest level”.
According to the UN News Center, Antonio Guterres, UN Secretary General tomorrow, June 13, will visit Turkmenistan.
