Tajikistan and Economic and Social Council discuss key priorities for 2026

On January 13, 2026, Mr. Jonibek Hikmat, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Tajikistan to the United Nations, held a meeting with Mr. Lok Bahadur Thapa, President of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
According to the Tajik MFA Information Department, the meeting provided an opportunity for an exchange of views on the priorities of ECOSOC for 2026, including strengthening coordination across the United Nations system and advancing the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The interlocutors gave particular attention to issues related to water and climate change, including their importance for sustainable development, climate resilience, and the needs of vulnerable countries, especially landlocked developing countries. In this context, Tajikistan’s commitment to promoting global water cooperation and advancing actions towards the implementation of SDG6, particularly during the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development was underscored.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the Permanent Representative conveyed to the President of ECOSOC an official invitation to participate in the Fourth High-Level International Conference on the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development”, 2018–2028, to be held in Dushanbe from 25 to 28 May 2026.
