Martin Chungong: “Emomali Rahmon’s initiative on water diplomacy deserves support at all levels”

DUSHANBE, 25.05.2026 (NIAT Khovar) – On May 25, President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Leader of the Nation Emomali Rahmon met with Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Martin Chungong.
Following the meeting, Martin Chungong noted that it was a great honor for him to be received by the Head of State of Tajikistan.
“I congratulated the President of Tajikistan and expressed my gratitude for his initiative on water diplomacy, which mobilizes global attention to the issue of sustainable water resources management. This is a worthy initiative that deserves support at all levels,” the Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union emphasized.
According to him, during the meeting he assured the President of Tajikistan of his readiness to mobilize parliamentary support for this international initiative.
Martin Chungong also stated that the parties exchanged views on current international and regional issues.
He noted that he was impressed by Tajikistan’s achievements in infrastructure development, strengthening peace and stability, as well as by the country’s role in bringing Central Asian states closer together.
Special attention during the meeting was paid to issues of gender equality and women’s empowerment. The Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union highly praised Tajikistan’s policies aimed at protecting women’s rights and increasing their role in society.
“We noted with satisfaction the growing representation of women in parliament, government bodies and other spheres of public life in Tajikistan,” Martin Chungong stated.
In conclusion, he expressed satisfaction with the meeting and said that he looks forward to a productive exchange of views during the Fourth High-Level International Conference on the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development”, which is opening in Dushanbe.
