Record breaking Benteke and Andre Silva lead World Cup qualifier goal-fests for Belgium and Portugal
Dushanbe, 11.10.2016. /NIAT “Khovar”/. Christian Benteke scored the fastest ever goal in a World Cup qualifier on Monday night to lead Belgium’s 6-0 charge against Gibraltar in their Group H fixture, Eurosport reports.
The Crystal Palace striker scored just seven seconds from kick-off to break the previous record of 8.3 seconds set by San Marino’s Davide Gualitieri against England in 1993.
But Benteke had plenty more to smile about as he found the net twice more (43′, 56′) to score a hat-trick in Belgium’s stunning 6-0 victory.
The frontman was joined by Alex Witsel (19′), Dries Mertens (51′) and Chelsea’s Eden Hazard (79′) on the scoresheet at the Estadio Algarve.
Belgium now top their group by a goal difference of six. Second place Greece join them on nine points after three games.
Portugal also had cause to celebrate after also scoring six without reply against the Faroe Islands at the Torsvllur in their Group B game.
Andre Silva scored a hat-trick within the first half (12′, 22′, 37′) to seal the deal for the Euro 2016 winners, before captain Cristiano Ronaldo added to the haul in the 65th minute.
Joao Moutinho and Cavaco Cancelo added insult to not insignificant injury both netting during time added on to give Portugal a further three points in their campaign.
After three games, Fernando Santos’ men are in second place in their group, behind Switzerland who have the maximum nine points.
