IAEA Experts Visited Oncology Centers in Tajikistan to Enhance Early Diagnostics for Cancer Disease

DUSHANBE, 03.05.2025 (NIAT Khovar) – The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Project Management Office for Tajikistan, Section Head of the Division for Europe – Ms. Sandra Marie Steyskál, Dr. Olivier Pellet – radiologist, and Dr. Olivera Ciraj — medical physicist from the IAEA’s Division for Human Health recently visited the Oncology Centers located in Dushanbe, Kulob, and Khujand. The delegation engaged with local officials to discuss the centers’ activities and effective strategies to Enhance Early Diagnostics for Cancer Disease.
This visit follows a significant development in 2025, during which the Oncology Centers were equipped with state-of-the-art digital X-ray diagnostic and digital mammography equipment. This advanced technology was made possible through the support of Tajikistan’s National Liaison Officer — Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Safety and Security Agency of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan. The new equipment plays a crucial role in enabling timely cancer diagnostics and fostering early detection and treatment for patients, thereby significantly advancing the nation’s efforts to combat cancer.
Following the tour of the Oncology Centers, IAEA representatives met with Mr. Gafur Muhsinzoda, the First Deputy Minister of Health and Social Protection of the Republic of Tajikistan. The discussions focused on national and strategic programs aimed at tackling cancer, highlighting the importance of ongoing cooperation between Tajikistan and the IAEA in strengthening the healthcare sector.
This collaboration underscores the commitment of both the IAEA and the Republic of Tajikistan to improve health outcomes and enhance cancer care for the population.
