The implementation of the reconstruction and upgrade of the Dushanbe-Kulma highway, specifically the Rushon-Varshez section, was discussed at a meeting between Tajikistan’s Transport Minister Azim Ibrohim and a delegation from the Islamic Development Bank, led by Farid Ahmad Khan, director of regional operations, the Ministry of Transport reported.
Ibrohim noted that the road is part of the international multimodal corridor connecting China, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran, Turkey, and Europe, and said it holds strategic importance for both Tajikistan and the region. The 235-kilometer Rushon-Varshez highway is classified as a third-category road.
The project is being carried out in stages, with 40 kilometers reconstructed in the first stage and 33 kilometers in the second. The meeting also focused on bilateral cooperation, including state investment projects in roads and transport. Khan praised the ministry for completing Bank-financed projects on time and to high standards, and reaffirmed the Bank’s commitment to supporting Tajikistan’s transport sector.
Tajikistan and the Islamic Development Bank have collaborated since the 2000s, achieving several milestones in reconstructing and modernizing roads of international importance in the country.
