Impact of Climate Change on the Condition of Glaciers in Tajikistan Discussed in Dushanbe

DUSHANBE, 18.12.2023 (NIAT Khovar) – The international scientific and practical conference entitled “The impact of climate change on the state of glaciers of Tajikistan and the preservation of glaciers” was held on December 15 in Dushanbe.
The conference was held as part of the implementation of the instructions of the President Emomali Rahmon on the protection of glaciers, as well as in connection with the implementation of the UN Resolution declaring 2025 as the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation.
The conference was attended by representatives of the Assembly of Representatives, National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan, ministries and departments, universities and institutes, UNESCO, the Institute of High Mountain Geophysics, Swiss development partners, and other domestic and foreign scientists.
More than 15 foreign scientists presented their scientific reports on current topics related to the melting of glaciers in Tajikistan.
The main directions of the conference were modern methods of researching the cryosphere, glaciers and snow cover, the current state of the cryosphere, ice cap, glaciers and water resources, climate change and its impact on glaciers, the influence of ecological, sanitary and environmental conditions on glaciers and ice conditions.
The domestic and foreign scientists especially noted that today the condition of glaciers, their assessment in the process of climate change and methods of their protection are of great importance. During the presentation of the reports, it was presented the first results of measuring the thickness of glaciers, in particular the Fedchenko glacier, which did not exist for the last 50 years. The speakers who spoke about the mass balance of the glacier proved that the mass balance is negative, that is, the melting of the glacier occurs more than its accumulation.
