DUSHANBE, 03.02.2026 (NIAT Khovar) – The completion of Phase One of the Rehabilitation of the Norak Hydropower Plant project, which began on June 2, 2017, is scheduled for December 31, 2026, following an extension, Director General of Barqi Tojik Open Joint Stock Company Mahmadumar Asozoda announced at a press conference on Tuesday.
According to Asozoda, Phase One of the project, taking into account amendments and additions, includes the modernization of four hydroelectric units and the plant’s main equipment, the delivery and installation of six single-phase 500/220/10 kV autotransformers, as well as dam safety improvement works.
Rehabilitation and modernization works at the Nurek Hydropower Plant are ongoing. Hydroelectric Unit No. 1 was officially commissioned on October 24, 2022, while Unit No. 4 was commissioned on August 30, 2024, with the participation of President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon and development partners.
Reconstruction works on Hydroelectric Unit No. 7 were fully completed on October 17, 2025, and following the required testing, the unit was connected to the national power grid on November 15, 2025.
Currently, the renovated hydro units — No. 1, No. 4, and No. 7 — are operating with a combined generation capacity of 375 megawatts.
Taking into account the operational regime of the energy system, Hydroelectric Unit No. 2, which is the fourth unit undergoing rehabilitation, was handed over to the contractor on October 22, 2025. Rehabilitation works are currently underway, and the unit is scheduled to be commissioned in October 2026.
The Director General also noted that works under other project components — including Section P2.1 (Dam Safety Monitoring), Section P3 (Dam Safety and Hydromechanical Equipment), Section P4 (Restoration of Open Switchgear and Autotransformers), and Section P5 (Diagnosis and Rehabilitation of Turbine Inlets) — are proceeding according to schedule.
Under the project, disbursements planned for 2025 amounted to USD 35.63 million. As of the reporting period, USD 35.6 million had been disbursed, representing nearly 100 percent of the annual plan.
Since the start of the project, total disbursements have reached USD 235.57 million, accounting for 71.8 percent of the overall project cost.
