On January 12, 2026, a partnership agreement was signed between the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) on the implementation of the project “Integrated Program for Reducing the Use of Hydrofluorocarbons and Sustainable Cooling in Tajikistan”, financed by the Global Environment Facility, khovar reports via Committee for Environmental Protection of the country.
The project aims to support the Republic of Tajikistan in implementing its international climate commitments under the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, including a 70% reduction in the use of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) by 2029.
Hydrofluorocarbons are among the most potent greenhouse gases, primarily used in refrigeration and air conditioning systems, and their reduction plays a crucial role in global efforts to combat climate change.
The project will include activities such as:
— Introducing phased controls on imports of hydrofluorocarbons and HFC-containing equipment;
— reducing emissions and improving the management of refrigerants throughout their life cycle by implementing the principles of life cycle management (LRM) and introducing monitoring methods to optimize equipment performance;
— accelerating the transition to modern, energy-efficient and climate-safe refrigeration technologies;
— promoting the introduction of innovative financial mechanisms to encourage private sector and end-user investment in sustainable refrigeration solutions.
The project will contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing energy efficiency, developing «green» technologies, and strengthening the country’s climate resilience. This initiative aligns with the priorities of the National Development Strategy of the Republic of Tajikistan up to 2030 and contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
