The United Nations Environment Programme presented its report, Global Environment Outlook, Seventh Edition: The Future We Choose (GEO-7), at the United Nations Environment Assembly in Nairobi.
According to the Dushanbe Water Process Secretariat, the report notes that environmental degradation causes millions of deaths and trillions of dollars in economic losses each year.
GEO-7 states that a transition to a stable climate, healthy ecosystems and reduced pollution could generate trillions of dollars annually for the global economy, while preventing premature deaths and reducing hunger and poverty.
The report also highlights the critical role of freshwater resources. Growing pressure on water supplies threatens sustainable development and could worsen water, food and social crises, particularly in vulnerable regions.
The authors call for systemic transformations across key sectors, including the economy, energy, food systems, waste management and environmental governance.
According to the report, coordinated action by governments, businesses and civil society could generate up to $20 trillion in annual global benefits by 2070.
The findings are considered important for advancing the global water agenda and preparations for the 2026 World Water Conference.
