Tajikistan sets the pace for energy transition in Central Asia

DUSHANBE, 15.01.2025 /NIAT “Khovar”/. Tajikistan has achieved the best results among Central Asian nations in the Energy Transition Index 2024, which is annually compiled by the World Economic Forum (WEF), reports NIAT “Khovar”.
Tajikistan ranked 71st in the global ranking, scoring 53.6 points. These indicators allowed Tajikistan to surpass Kyrgyzstan (80th place, 52.7 points) and Kazakhstan (98th place, 50.1 points).
The Energy Transition Index (ETI) reflects a comprehensive assessment of the state of the world’s energy systems. It is based on two key criteria: the efficiency of the current energy system (60% weight) and readiness for transition to a sustainable development model (40% weight). It also includes such indicators as availability and reliability of energy supply, innovation, quality of infrastructure, as well as government support and investment in the industry.
The Nordic countries traditionally took the top positions in the global ranking. Sweden was the leader with a score of 78.4 points, followed by Denmark (75.2 points) and Finland (74.5 points). The average for all countries was 56.5 points, which is only slightly higher than Tajikistan’s result.
According to the UN, Central Asia is experiencing unprecedented growth in renewable energy capacity, mainly from solar and wind power.
